Arion Brings its 30th Season to a Glorious Close with the Concert Grandiose & Majestic Mozart!

Montreal, Tuesday, April 26, 2011 — To crown its 30th Season, Arion Baroque Orchestra, Quebec’s only early music orchestra on period instruments, will perform Mozart’s grandiose “Jupiter” Symphony, the prodigious musician’s final essay in the genre. The concerts will take place on May 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. and on May 15 at 2 p.m., at Redpath Hall.

Dutch cellist Jaap ter Linden will be conducting the more than 20 musicians of Arion. For the first time in Canada, the brilliant young Russian violinist Dmitry Sinkovsy will shine in Mozart’s Violin Concerto in A Major. He will also be heard alongside ter Linden, oboist Matthew Jennejohn, and bassoonist Anna Marsh in Haydn’s all too rarely heard Sinfonia Concertante.

Jaap ter Linden

As one of the first early music specialists, Jaap ter Linden witnessed the very beginnings of many of the oldest and finest baroque ensembles as co-founder of Musica da Camera and principal cellist of Musica Antiqua Köln, The English Concert, and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra. From these auspicious beginnings, he moved further into the spotlight, either playing solo concerts and intimate ensemble repertoire with the world’s finest interpreters or at the helm of an orchestra as conductor. He founded and directs the Mozart Akademie (with which he has recorded the complete Mozart symphonies) and is a regular guest director and soloist with the Arion Baroque Orchestra. He has led many period instrument orchestras such as the San Francisco Philharmonia Baroque, Portland Baroque, and Amsterdam Bach Soloists and has lent his expertise to modern ensembles such as the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie. His extensive discography as player and conductor boasts many award-winning recordings for labels such as Harmonia Mundi, Archiv, ECM, Deutsche Grammophon, and more recently Brilliant Classics. In 2006, Jaap released his second recording of the Bach Cello Suites. Most recently, Jaap has dived into the world of opera, conducting Purcell’s King Arthur and Gluck’s Iphigénie en Aulide.

Dmitry Sinkovsky

Dmitry attended the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, combining his studies with tours to Europe. He took lessons with early music pioneer Marie Leonhardt and attended masterclasses with Thomas Zehetmair, Sigiswald Kuijken, Ryo Terakado, Roger Norrington, and Andreas Staier. In 2003 Dmitry joined the ensemble Musica Petropolitana and co-founded Pratum Integrum, an ensemble specializing in early Russian music. Dmitry recorded a series of works by Georg Philipp Telemann, Anton Ferdinand Tietz, Antonio Rosetti, Johann Christian Bach, and quartets by Joseph Woefl. Many of his recordings have been enthusiastically received by music journals such as Diapason, Revista Musica, Prelude, and Toccata. Dmitry leads several European ensembles, including Il Complesso barocco (Alan Curtis, Italy). Dmitry is a laureate of various international competitions: Musica Antiqua Brugge in Belgium and H.I.F von Biber Wettbewerb in Austria. Dmitry Sinkovsky’s repertoire encompasses a wide range of musical periods, from Italian composers of the 16th and 17th centuries and Biber’s Mystery sonatas to the great 18th-century works from Bach to Mozart, and to numerous later works including the violin concertos of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Brahms. Since 2005 Dmitry has been teaching violin in the Early Music Department of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Dmitry plays on a violin by Francesco Ruggeri, Cremona 1680, kindly on loan from The Jumpstart Jr. Foundation.
