Mathieu Lussier

An inquisitive and versatile musician, Mathieu Lussier strives with dynanism and passion to make the baroque bassoon known as a solo instrument throughout North America and Europe.  He performs as bassoonist, soloist, and/or conductor with groups such as Arion (Montreal), Les Violons du Roy (Quebec), the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Toronto) and the Orchestra de la Mission Saint-Charles (Lamèque).  Since 2007, he has also been the artistic director of the International Festival of Baroque Music in Lamèque.  Dedicating a large portion of his time to practicing chamber music, he is a member of the Pentaèdre Ensemble of Montreal, the Caliban Quartet of Bassoonists of Toronto, as well as the Musica Franca ensemble.

His numerous solo recordings include close to a dozen concertos for bassoon by Vivaldi, Graupner, Telemann, Corrette, a disc of sonatas for bassoon by Boismortier, two discs dedicated to solo bassoon music by François Devienne, a disc of music for wind sextets by Gossec as well as the Bataclan! album, a disc of South American-inspired music for bandoneon, harpsichord, and bassoon.

Composer

As a composer, works coming from his catalogue of more than 30 pieces are regularly played in concert in North America, Europe, and Australia.  His most recent commissions include a Double Concerto for trumpet, bassoon, and string orchestra recorded by Guy Few, Nadina Mackie, and the Toronto Chamber Orchestra, "Le Vent des Andes", a symphonic fantasia commissioned by the Oshawa-Durham Symphony Orchestra, and two concertos commissioned by Guy Few and Nadina Mackie that were created in Toronto's Glenn Gould Studio in February 2008, at the time of an event broadcast throughout Canada by CBC.  In August 2009, "Bassango", in its version for bassoon and string orchestra, was awarded 3rd place in the Contemporary Classical Song category at the Just Plain Folks awards in Nashville, Tennessee.
