Music has always brought an added lustre to both sacred and secular ceremonies. During the English Baroque period, alongside anthems for voice and orchestra performed at church services, equally lavish compositions enhanced all kinds of events. Henry Purcell, for example, composed his ode Come ye Sons of Art for the birthday of Queen Mary II in 1694.
